MEET ONE OF OUR INTERNS

What year are you and what are you studying at CSULB?
I am a fourth year Journalism student with an emphasis in broadcast. I am also earning a minor in Spanish.
How did you find out about the internship at KJazz and why did you decide to do it?
During my third year of college I was looking for a second internship, definitely one in radio. After looking at different public radio stations I thought, it would be so cool to work at KJazz, since I love jazz and it is on the CSULB campus. I saw a post for interns online and then within a month I was working at the station.
What's been the most interesting thing about working at KJazz or what have you learned? What's been the most unexpected thing?
I have learned a lot about how a radio station works and every aspect in radio including the business and production side. I have done just about it all here at KJazz. I help with marketing and promoting via Facebook, I have done street team, written KJazz chronicle entries, worked at pledge drives, assisted with production and I have also been training on how to operate the board, so I have been in the studio with the DJs.
I have obviously learned a lot about the station and production but so much about jazz. I have always been a jazz fan but after being immersed in it for over a year now I like to call myself a jazz and blues lover. I have learned a lot from the DJs and staff who are so passionate about this music. I have gone to multiple concerts and festivals, met and interviewed musicians.
The most unexpected thing about working here is how involved I am. At a lot of internships (especially in the media industry), interns are busy getting coffee and sandwiches for the other staff. But here at KJazz I have the opportunity to be involved in the production of the station. Even some of my work has been aired and published on the website. As an intern and an aspiring radio journalist it feels good to be getting my foot in the door and having articles and stories produced and published. I am just so happy that I am able to learn and work at a place that has so much passion and dedication. KJazz's goal is to continue to keep this music alive and on our airways and I love being apart of that process.
Tell us a little about your recent trip to New Orleans?
I went to New Orleans over Spring Break to visit family but also took advantage of being in the birth place of jazz. I wanted to do a little work while I was out there and cover some jazz events for the station. I was able to attend the Jazz Stamp ceremony and write a story on it. Also, I went to Preservation Hall and listened to the Preservation Hall masters band and interviewed the band leader. It was so fun to be able to attend these events and talk to these musicians and fellow jazz fans on behalf of the station. I have been going to New Orleans for a few years but this was the first time I really ventured out and was able to listen to jazz in the city. The best part of the whole trip was sitting in the Preservation Hall listening to the band play "Basin Street Blues", and it was because of the opportunity I had through KJazz. Now my jazz adventures in the Big Easy are published as KJazz chronicles on the website.
What's up next for you? What do you want to do when you graduate?
Well I graduate in May, so the job hunt has begun. I am actually traveling to Mexico for a month to finish up some units and study Spanish. But when I get back I hope to continue a career in radio, whether it is news or music. I have learned so much from the journalism department at CSULB and of course my time here at KJazz. I really have no idea what my future entails but I will definitely use every skill I have learned here at KJazz to help me with my journey. Also the dream would to be able to continue to work and be apart of KJazz, but the dream for any college intern is to have a job after graduation.
