VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

We here at KJazz want to send out a huge thank you to all our volunteers who came in during our last pledge drive to help behind the scenes answering phones. One of our volunteers was Andrea Chattler, a college student who was back in town during spring break. Andrea started volunteering for us as a high school student.

Why did you start volunteering for KJazz and why do you keep coming back?
About four summers ago, my mom was concerned with my lack of community service hours required for high school graduation and she noticed that KJazz was having a pledge drive. She thought it would be a really fun way to gain hours. At first, I was not too crazy to do it because, in all honesty, what teenage girl wants to do what her mother tells her? But, I had such a good time that I kept coming back. Four years later, I have volunteered over 100 hours during the pledge drives and they have been time well spent!

What is your most memorable moment as a volunteer? Your most memorable caller?
My most memorable moment as a volunteer was probably when I took a break from calls to get water and I heard Helen telling stories about me on the air! I don't think I have a most memorable caller, I still have yet to get an iPod call!

What is your favorite thing about volunteering?
My favorite thing about volunteering is probably meeting the DJs and the special guests the station has every once in a while.

What have you learned about how the station runs from seeing behind the scenes?
I learned how each DJ picks the music they play in their hours. I learned how the booth kinda runs. I can't really pick out specific things I've learned during my time there but it's been a great experience.

Would you recommend other listeners try volunteering for KJazz?
Yes of course! And the networking is good because I managed to get a job through the station.

What are you up to now? What are you studying in school and what do you hope to do with it?
I am currently a freshman at University of the Pacific. I'm studying music therapy and my future career would be having a private practice working with adolescents with social/behavioral disabilities.

Thanks Andrea for volunteering and for answering our questions.

If you are interested in volunteering during our pledge drives, send an email to volunteer@kkjz.org and we'll add you to our volunteer email list.
