SPRING IS HERE

Programming Update
On Monday, May 2nd, KJazz will welcome legendary jazz musician David Benoit as morning drive host -- weekdays from 6am to 10am. A five-time Grammy nominee and world-renowned jazz pianist and composer, Benoit has been a long-time, local fan of KJazz. Bubba Jackson will move to the 6pm-10pm slot Monday through Thursday, which will expand our great live and local programming. KJazz also will launch a new programming feature on Monday -- "Jazz at Six". The feature will showcase a full hour of uninterrupted jazz hits at both 6am and 6pm, Monday through Friday.

What better way to kick off spring than with a celebration of jazz during Jazz Appreciation Month? This April marks the 10th anniversary of Jazz Appreciation Month, and KJazz is proudly featuring five living jazz legends on their birthdays - Hugh Masekela, Herbie Hancock, Randy Weston, Frank Strazzeri, and Toots Thielemans. We're also honoring five jazz giants who were born in April -- Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Mongo Santamaria, Lionel Hampton, and Gene Ammons. Plus, we're giving you an opportunity to express your own appreciation for jazz through the KJazz website with comments and personal reflections, which we're reading over the air.

Each spring, we also look forward to the wonderful free live jazz and blues events that we'll be involved with around town. Look for KJazz at the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts Jazz at LACMA series on Friday evenings, which began on April 15th with the father-son duo of John Clayton and Gerald Clayton. We'll also be at LACMA's Latin Sounds concert series on Saturdays, beginning May 28th and continuing through September. KJazz will be returning to the Hollywood & Highland Center for our 13-week Wine, Jazz, and Moonlight Series, beginning on Tuesday, June 7th.

This spring we also created something very special with the Fowler Museum at UCLA in honor of their new exhibit Jam Session: America's Jazz Ambassadors Embrace the World. To accompany this collection of photographs and documents from the mid-1950s through the 1970s of jazz greats who toured the globe as cultural diplomats for the U.S., we're holding three jazz salons at the Fowler Museum. The first, on Sunday, April 17th at 2 p.m., was hosted by KJazz Ambassador, Tommy Hawkins, who led an interactive salon that explored the definition of jazz with legendary flutist Hubert Laws. This Sunday, May 1st at 2 p.m., Bubba Jackson will discuss the role that black musicians played in introducing jazz music to Europeans. Finally, on Sunday, May 15th at 2 p.m., Helen Borgers will explore the impact that touring had on the music of jazz ambassadors. She'll play from recordings and speak with French-born, American-based, jazz pianist Christian Jacob, and his wife, Wilder, daughter of the late Maynard Ferguson, about their experiences as present day jazz ambassadors.

This spring we hope you'll help us celebrate this wonderful music by tuning in for our special Jazz Appreciation Month programming, sharing your thoughts with us, and joining us in person for free live concerts and our special jazz salons.

Yours in jazz and blues,

Stephanie Levine
