Christian McBride

Four-time GRAMMY®-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride's path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. Whether behind the bass or away from it, Christian McBride is always of the music. From jazz (Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, to R&B (Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown) to pop/rock (Sting, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Don Henley, Bruce Hornsby) to hip-hop/neo-soul (The Roots, D'Angelo, Queen Latifah) to classical (Kathleen Battle, Edgar Meyer, Shanghai Quartet, Sonus Quartet), he is a luminary with one hand ever reaching for new heights, and the other extended in fellowship-and perhaps the hint of a challenge-inviting us to join him.

McBride shines brightest in a small jazz group, and with his New Jawn Quartet he has created a high-powered, energized unit. This special concert to benefit KJazz will be the Los Angeles debut of McBride's New Jawn Quartet. Trumpeter Josh Evans is a protégé of Jackie McLean and, in addition to his work as a bandleader, has performed with drummers Rashied Ali, T.S. Monk, and Winard Harper. Marcus Strickland topped both the DownBeat Critics and Readers Polls for Rising Star Saxophonist and has performed with Roy Haynes, Dave Douglas, and Jeff "Tain" Watts. Son of drummer Freddie Waits, drummer Nasheet Waits is a founding member of pianist Jason Moran's Bandwagon Trio and has performed with many of the jazz world's elite, including Andrew Hill, Fred Hersch, and Antonio Hart.

Tiffany Austin

Vocalist Tiffany Austin's tradition-rooted yet totally modern style has established her as one of the fastest rising jazz stars. Austin's music and voice draw upon influences such as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin, yet she also infuses songs with her own signature style that is precise, intelligent, and soulful. In fact, her arrangements vary from classic swing to contemporary R&B á la Robert Glasper or Jose James. Her emotional and nuanced delivery has caught the attention of eminent artists, whom she has joined onstage: vibraphonist Roy Ayers at Motion Blue (Japan), drummer Tommy Campbell at the Blue Note (NYC), and saxophonist John Handy for a three-night engagement at Dizzy's (NYC) commemorating his 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival performance.

Her much-anticipated debut recording, Nothing But Soul, has received a warm reception from audiences and critics alike, including a four-star DownBeat Magazine review.
