Born Feb. 7,1936 in Monroe, Michigan, raised
in Arizona from age 10. Started trumpet at 8 and was playing professionally while still in high school.
Attended Arizona State at Tempe and worked in Phoenix until moving to Los Angeles
in 1959.
Joined Stan Kenton in 1960 and worked with most of the name big bands on the
west coast, including Sy Zentner, Les Brown, Louie Bellson, Ray Charles, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Clare Fischer, Bob Florence, Bill Berry, Benny Carter, Bill Holman, Bill Watrous, Shorty Rogers, Gordon Brisker, Mike Barone, Matt Cattingub and Tom Talbert. Also worked and recorded with many small groups such as Shorty Rogers' Giants, the Dave Pell Octet, Supersax, Willie Bobo, Pete Cristlieb, Poncho Sanchez, Paulino da Costa, Moacir Santos and Cecilia Coleman.
Provided background for many singers, including Tony Bennett, Nat Cole, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Jack Jones, Diane Schurr, Natalie Cole,
Toni Tenille, Vicci Carr and Diane Krall.
Recorded over 100 jazz albums and CD's with more to come. The latest under his
own name are“Gathered Around”, a video DVD on AIX Records, and “Live
